Five former Ocean City Nor'easters selected in 2023 MLS SuperDraft
Two players selected in first round, headlined by Josh Bolma who was taken No. 4 overall
The 2023 MLS SuperDraft was moved to December and it was an historic night for five former Ocean City Nor'easters players who were selected. This was the most Ocean City alums who have been taken in a single draft, and the first time that multiple players were selected in the first round, and two of them were taken by the same club.
Below are the five players drafted:
Joshua Bolma (Maryland)
Accra, Ghana
Round 1, 4th overall
New England Revolution
Ocean City season(s): 2021
The New England Revolution traded up to No. 4 to select Joshua Bolma. They sent the No. 10 pick and $200,000 in general allocation money to San Jose for the pick. Bolma joined the Nor'easters in the second half of the 2021 season, helping the club clinch a playoff berth. He started and picked up an assist in a 6-0 road win over the Philadelphia Lone Star FC in the regular season finale. He also started both of the team's playoff games as the Storm advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
At Maryland, Bolma made an immediate impact in his two years with the Terps. He was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and he earned First Team All-Big Ten honors in both seasons as both a freshman and sophomore. He helped Maryland win the Big Ten regular season championship and make the NCAA tournament in both seasons.
Abdi Salim (Syracuse)
Buffalo, NY
Round 1, 17th overall
Orlando City SC
Ocean City season(s): 2022
Abdi Salim was one of the anchors of the Syracuse Orange defense this past season that won the first national championship in program history. He was selected 17th overall by Orlando City SC, a club that is coming off its first US Open Cup championship in 2022.
Salim played in seven games for the Nor'easters in 2022, starting six as the club finished with a historic undefeated regular season and a club record for goals against average (0.64). He also assisted on a goal by fellow MLS draftee MD Myers in a 2-0 road win over rival Reading United AC on June 4.
Salim spent his freshman season close to home (Buffalo, NY) at Buffalo State University (NCAA Div. 3) where he was the conference's rookie of the year. That caught the attention of ACC power Syracuse who brought him in and he was the Team MVP in his first season. After missing the 2021 season due to injury, he was a big part of the defense in 2022, starting every game of the postseason which ended with Syracuse winning its first national title.
Luis Grassow (Kentucky)
Munich, Germany
Round 2, 47th overall
Orlando City SC
Ocean City season(s): 2021
Luis Grassow will join fellow Ocean City alum Abdi Salim in Orlando City as the defender was selected in the second round (47th overall). Grassow played for Ocean City during the 2021 season, playing in just one regular season game. In that game, he started and scored a goal in a 7-0 road win over Lehigh Valley United on May 19, 2021.
The Munich, Germany native traveled to the Bluegrass State to attend the University of Kentucky. In 2021, Grassow joined two other Ocean City alums (Jan Hoffelner, Marcel Meinzer) to form one of the nation's top defenses. The Wildcats led the nation in clean sheets (12) and goals against average and advanced to the Sweey 16 of the NCAA tournament. Grassow also added three goals and four assists. This past year, Grassow exceeded expectations by adding 11 more clean sheets, three goals, and was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Grassow was a semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy as the nation's most outstanding player.
MD Myers (Rutgers / High Point)
Delran, NJ
Round 3, 66th overall
New York City FC
Ocean City season(s): 2021, 2022
MD Myers won't have to travel far for his first job in professional soccer. The Delran, N.J. native was selected in the third round (66th overall) by New York City FC. Myers played two seasons with the Nor'easters (2021-22), scoring six goals in 20 regular season matches. He also scored a playoff goal in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Long Island Rough Riders.
Myers began his college career at High Point University where he had a breakout season as a sophomore. Myers started all 14 games and scored 14 goals, tied for second-most in the nation, including five game-winning goals (also second-best in the nation). Myers also added four assists, which put him second in the country in scoring with 33 points. As a result, he became the first High Point player in history to be a Semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding college player in the country. He also won a school award as High Point University’s male athlete of the year. His individual success led to team success as well, as High Point won the Big South regular season and tournament championships and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament. He led High Point in scoring as a junior before returning to his home state to play for Rutgers for his senior year. That proved to be a good decision as he helped the Scarlet Knights make history.
He led the Big Ten in scoring with 13 goals and seven assists (33 points) which led to him being unanimously named Big Ten Player of the Year as well as an All-Big Ten First Team selection. He helped the Knights win the school's first Big Ten Championship in program history.
Andrew Privett (Penn State)
Fallston, MD
Round 3, 69th overall
Charlotte FC
Ocean City season(s): 2021
Privett was selected in the third round by Charlotte FC (69th overall). The Fallston, Md. native played for Ocean City during the 2021 season, playing in one regular season game. That game, he helped the Nor'easters earn a 3-2 road win over Northern Virginia FC.
Privett had a breakout season with the Nittany Lions as a junior. That year, he helped Penn State win a conference regular season and tournament championship and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament. It was the first time in program history that they won the Big Ten “double”. Privett led the Lions and the Big Ten in scoring with nine goals and four assists in 21 appearances (17 starts). He was an All-Big Ten Second Team and an All-Region Third Team selection. This past season, he scored two goals and added four assists in his senior campaign.
