The 2021 college soccer season this past fall was filled with incredible individual and team performances by alums of the Ocean City Nor’easters. We had multiple players win national championships, in addition to players who were All-Americans and several of them who were All-Conference selections.

Below is our annual recap of Ocean City alums and how they performed this past season, separated by school:

AKRON

Will Portman
Senior - Defender
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Portman, who played for the Under-23 program at Sheffield United before traveling stateside for school, transferred from one power to another, moving from Louisville to Akron. After three seasons at Louisville, Portman played in 17 of the team’s 18 games (8 starts) as the Zips earned an at-large bid to make the program’s 34th NCAA tournament appearance. Akron would lose a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to Santa Clara.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY

Austin DaSilva
Senior - Forward
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

After being on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List the previous season, DaSilva followed that up with another impressive season with the Great Danes. DaSilva played in all 18 games (14 starts) scoring a goal and adding five assists. He was named to the America East All-Conferernce Second Team and was also named to the America East All-Tournament team.



BOWDOIN COLLEGE

Michael Webber
Junior - Goalkeeper
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Webber added another impressive individual season at NCAA Division III Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Maine). This year, Webber split time with Chris Kingston, but he still led the team with four shutouts, a career-best 0.39 goals against average and a team-leading .921 save percentage and a 5-3-0 record. He also picked up an assist.

CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD

Carlos Armendariz
Junior - Midfielder
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Armendariz started all 16 games he played in during the fall season and was a second-team All-League selection. He scored four goals and had one assist for nine points, and finished as the second-leading scorer on the team. Two of the four goals were game-winners, but all four of them were from the penalty spot. Four penalty kick goals led the league.

CLEMSON

Tyler Hutchinson
Sophomore - Defender
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Clemson won the school’s third national title and first since 1987. They beat No. 2 seed Washington 2-0 in the championship game in Cary, N.C. They defeated the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 9 overall seeds en route to the national title. (beat Oregon State, Denver, Kentucky, respectively). While he got to lift the trophy, unfortunately, Hutchinson, a Clifton Park, N.J. native, only played in four games as an injury limited his playing time.



COLORADO - COLORADO SPRINGS

Alex Andersson
Sophomore - Midfielder

After winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Freshman of the Year award and earning Second Team All-Conference honors last year, what would Alex Andersson do for an encore? In his sophomore season, he led the conference in scoring with 12 goals in just 10 appearances (8 starts) and not only earned First Team All-Conference honors, but he was also a First Team All-American and All-Region selection. He was also an All-Conference Academic selection too.  

CONNECTICUT

Felix Metzler
Senior - Defender
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

After being an All-Big East selection in the spring season, Metzler started 15 of the 18 games he played in, helping the Huskies defense earn three shutouts.

Jahmali Waite
Senior - Goalkeeper
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Waite played every minute for the UConn Huskies during the fall season, racking up a 0.95 goals against average with five clean sheets.

CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY

Tyler Watson
Senior - Midfielder
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Watson, who was the Nor'easters 2021 Breakthrough Player of the Year, added another outstanding season at Cumberland University as the Phoenix earned an at-large bid to the NAIA tournament (13-5-1 record). Watson was an NAIA All-American (3rd Team) for the second time, becoming the first Cumberland player in school history to be a two-time All-American. Watson joins Nor’easters teammate Bakary Bagayoko as one of four All-Americans in school history.

Watson scored a team-leading 12 goals and added five assists in 18 games (29 points). Four of his 12 goals were game-winners.

He finishes the season with 36 goals and 21 assists (93 points), which rank fourth in school history for each category. Watson earned his third Mid-South Conference First Team honor, to go along with his Freshman of the Year award and four Academic All-Mid-South Conference awards and three NAIA Scholar Athlete awards.



ELON

Zack DiDonato
Redshirt Senior - Defender

DiDonto played in 10 games, including four starts for Elon in the fall season. The team finished with a 9-8-0 record, their first winning season since 2017.

HIGH POINT

MD Myers
Junior - Forward
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

After being a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist last season, MD Myers set a pretty high bar for the fall campaign. This past season, Myers led the Panthers in scoring again with seven goals and three assists in 17 games and fell one game short of returning to the NCAA tournament. High Point fell to Campbell 3-2 in the Big South Final. Myers finished with Second Team All-Big South honors. Next season, Myers, a Delran, N.J., will be returning to his home state to play for Rutgers.



HOLY CROSS

Tristan Stephani
Freshman - Goalkeeper
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Stephani started his college career at Holy Cross splitting time with upperclassman Jimmy Joyce. Stephani played in five games, starting one match as Holy Cross had an outstanding season. The team had an 8-8-3 record, the most points and wins for the Crusaders since 2013.

HOLY FAMILY

Sean McCormick
5th Year - Midfield/Forward
Ocean City Nor’easters 2018

McCormick played in all 20 of Holy Family’s games in the fall season, starting eight of them. He scored a goal and added two assists while playing over 1,000 minutes. The Tigers won seven games during the regular season, but managed to advance to the conference semifinals before narrowly falling to No. 1 seed Post University.

INDIANA

Callum Stretch
Junior - Defender
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Stretch did not play in 2021 after transferring from the University of Denver, where he was coached by Ocean City alum Jamie Franks. Stretch was one of the youngest Americans to ever sign with an English club when he joined the Tottenham academy at the age of 15. He later ended up at Aston Villa before returning stateside to play college soccer for Coach Franks.

KEISER UNIVERSITY

Nick Akoto
Sophomore - Midfielder
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Akoto had a change of scenery, moving further south from Tennessee Wesleyan to Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Fla. Akoto started 13 of the 17 games he played in and helped the Seahawks finish with a program record 16 wins (16-3-1) and the school’s first-ever NAIA national championship. They defeated the Mobile Rams 2-0 in the national championship game. The Seahawks also had a school record 10 clean sheets with three of them comingin the national tournament. Akoto was also second on the team with five assists.  



KENTUCKY

Jan Hoffelner

The Kentucky Wildcats had one of their best seasons in program history and three former Nor’easters played a big role in that. The Wildcats only lost two games all season, and remained one of the last remaining undefeated teams in the nation. Kentucky didn’t lose their first game until Oct. 30 (a school record 14-game unbeaten streak) and the other loss came in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. With a 15-2-4 record, it was the fewest losses in school history. The Wildcats also won the Conference USA tournament title for the second time in school history (the school’s 11th conference championship overall).

A big part of the Wildcats’ success had to do with the team’s defense, led by goalkeeper Jan Hoffelner, who transferred from St. John’s. He was named a First Team All-American, the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Year, led the nation in goals against average (0.417) and tied for the nation’s lead in clean sheets with 12. Hoffelner was also named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, and was the only goalkeeper on the list of 15 players vying for the title of the nation’s best player. Surprisingly, Hoffelner was not selected in the MLS SuperDraft, but he may still end up in the league as he was recently training with Real Salt Lake.

Luis Grassow was part of the defense in front of Hoffelner that helped the team earn those 12 clean sheets that  tied for best in the nation. Grassow started 19 of the 20 games he played in and also scored three goals and added three assists. Grassow was a First Team All-C-USA selection as well as a member of the C-USA All-Tournament team and was named the Defensive MVP of the C-USA championship game.

Meinzer, one of the UK captains, scored a pair of goals and added an assist in 18 starts for the Wildcats. He was also named First Team All-Conference and was named to the C-USA All-Tournament team.

All three Germans (Jan is from Frankfurt, Marcel is from Herxheim and Grassow is from Munich) were also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team. 





LAFAYETTE

Marcos Kitromilides

Kitromilides played in 17 games for Lafayette (15 starts) and finished second on the team in scoring with five goals and two assists (12 points). The Cyprus youth international was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team, which is the third time he has earned postseason honors in his third season with the Leopards (Second Team in 2019, First Team in Spring of 2021



LIPSCOMB

Honore Kalala

Bakary Bagayoko
Graduate - Forward

Two former Cumberland University players made a big impact at Lipscomb University.

Bagayoko made a big splash in his first season with the Bison. After being named an NAIA All-American with Cumberland last season, he picked up right where he left off at Lipscomb, scoring five goals and adding five assists (15 points), finishing third on the team in scoring.

Once again, Kalala was a big part of the Lipscomb defense, starting 16 of the 17 games he played in, finishing fifth on the team in minutes played (1,409). Last season, in the spring, he was a Second Team All-Conference team selection.

Bagayoko scored a goal in Lipscomb’s 4-1 win over Central Arkansas in the Atlantic Sun tournament final, which earned the Bison a trip to the NCAA tournament. In the tournament’s opening game against Hofstra on the road, Bagayoko scored a goal in the losing effort.



LOYOLA MARYMOUNT

Duhaney Williams
Graduate - Forward

Williams started 11 of the 18 games he played in for Loyola, scoring a goal and an assist. He helped the Lions to an impressive 12-4-0 record but unfortunately did not hear their name called for the NCAA tournament field. In the spring, Williams was a All-West Coast Conference honorable mention selection.

MARIST

Kyle Galloway
Graduate - Forward
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

The Marist Red Foxes received a huge offensive boost when Kyle Galloway joined the team after spending four seasons at Rutgers. Galloway started 19 of the 21 games he played in, scoring seven goals (2nd best on the team) and dishing out a team-leading six assists, to finish as the team’s second-leading scorer. He was also second on the team with three game-winning goals.

Galloway helped lead the Red Foxes to the program’s first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championship, and then followed that up with the fourth MAAC tournament title in school history. Galloway would score a goal in the championship game and also convert a penalty kick as Marist edged Rider 5-3 in the shootout after a 2-2 draw. Marist finished with 12 wins, which is tied for the most in program history, but the Red Foxes’ season came to an end in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, falling to Providence, 2-0. It was just the third time that Marist had reached the NCAA tournament, and the first time since 2005.



MARYLAND

Joshua Bolma

Caden Stafford

There weren’t very many better freshman duos in the country this past season than Maryland’s Joshua Bolma and Caden Stafford. Both players finished in the Top 4 in scoring with both players making the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team. They played a big role in another successful season for Maryland as the team was consistently ranked and finished as the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, the team suffered a stunning upset in the opening round, falling to LIU on a late game-winning goal, 1-0.

Bolma was the Terps’ second-leading scorer in his debut season, scoring four goals and adding four assists. He led Maryland with three game-winning goals and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, in addition to being a First Team All-Big Ten selection. Bolma was also named to the United Soccer Coaches’ All-Region Team and was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year.

Stafford, the Nor’easters’ 2021 Young Player of the Year, scored three goals and dished out two assists in 16 games for the Terps (9 starts). Stafford was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

NEBRASKA OMAHA

Neville Morgan

The Nor’easters’ 2021 Team MVP and Defensive Player of the Year took his talents to Omaha to play for the University of Nebraska. After four years at Lindsey Wilson College where he was an All-American, Morgan jumped right into the Nebraska lineup, starting every match he was available for (14 games). He played more than 1,000 minutes and helped the Mavericks earn six clean sheets. As a result, Morgan was awarded Second Team All-Summit honors.

NORTH CAROLINA

Akeim Clarke

The Tar Heels returned to the NCAA tournament and three Ocean City alums played a role to another winning season in the very competitive ACC.

Alec Smir started every game for UNC, playing in all but 18 minutes this season. He finished with a 1.03 goals against average, which ranked third in the ACC, along with a conference-leading 10 shutouts (ranked fourth nationally). Smir was named a Second-Team All-Region selection and a First-Team All-ACC selection. He is also one of two players in UNC history to earn double digit clean sheets in back-to-back seasons.

After his impressive career at UNC, Smir was drafted in the Third Round (62nd overall) of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas.

Rose played in 18 of the 20 games (4 starts) scoring three goals. Rose scored goals against Bucknell in the season opener, and scored in a 2-0 road win against Virginia and a 3-1 home win over Notre Dame.

Clarke, who played in 15 games and scored a goal in the NCAA tournament in 2020, did not see the field during the fall 2021 season due to injury.



NORTH CAROLINA GREENSBORO

Theo Quartey

UNC Greensboro featured one of the most potent offenses in the country and the Nor’easters’ 2021 Creative Player of the Year was a big part of it. The Spartans led the nation in goals per game (2.89) and goal differential (+38). Theo Quartey scored four goals and had one assist in 18 appearances (9 starts). His four goals was tied for second on the team.

Kaissidis had some limited playing time as a freshman in a crowded midfield. The Swede played in five games (starting one) for the Spartans in his first season with UNCG.

The Spartans would win the Southern Conference regular season title for the second time in the last three years. Despite winning the regular season title and winning 13 games, the Spartans did not hear their name called for the NCAA tournament.



NC STATE

Tal Segev
Sophomore - Midfielder
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Segev played in just seven games this past season in his second year with the Wolfpack. Segev was recovering from offseason surgery so he was only able to play in a little more than one-third of the season. NC State finished with a 7-8-2 record in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. A couple fortunate bounces for the Wolfpack could have made the season a lot different. Out of the team’s eight losses, five of them were by a single goal, and two of them were against ranked teams, including a loss to eventual national champion Clemson.

OLD DOMINION

Josh Thacker
Sophomore - Defender

Thacker, the 2020 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, followed up his debut season at ODU with another solid season anchoring the Monarchs’ backline. In the fall of 2021, Thacker was one of three players to start all 14 games. He also scored a goal for ODU, a game-winning tally against George Mason. As a result, Thacker was named to the All-Conference Third Team and the C-USA All-Academic team. Thacker will be experiencing a big change of scenery in 2022 as he will be traveling across the country to attend Seattle University.

OREGON STATE

Kasper Skraep
Junior - Defender

After two successful seasons at Coastal Carolina, Skraep headed west to play for Oregon State. Skraep played in eight games (starting three) in his first season with the Beavers. Oregon State had an outstanding season, finishing 14-2-4, winning the school’s first Pac-12 title and being named the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Despite being the top seed, the Beavers fell short in the Elite Eight, falling to eventual national champion Clemson in penalty kicks.



PENN STATE

Owen Elliott

Andrew Privett
Junior - Midfielder

Penn State had a historic season in the Big Ten this past season and Andrew Privett was a big part of it. The Nittany Lions won the conference regular season and tournament championships and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament. It was the first time in program history that they won the Big Ten “double”. Privett led the Lions and the Big Ten in scoring with nine goals and four assists in 21 appearances (17 starts). He was an All-Big Ten Second Team and an All-Region Third Team selection. 

Owen Elliott started three games for Penn State in his redshirt sophomore season, earning one win, a draw and a loss and one shutout.

PENNSYLVANIA

Joey Bhangdia
Graduate - Forward

RC Williams

A pair of 2019 Nor’easters teammates returned for one more season for the Penn Quakers and turned in productive seasons. The team finished above .500 for the third season in a row, something that the Penn program hasn’t accomplished since the early 1980s (1982-1984).

RC Williams was a team captain and was one of three players on the team to start all 16 games, while finishing second on the team in minutes played. Williams was a part of a backline that held 10 opponents to one goal or fewer, including three clean sheets. He also scored the game-winning goal in the team’s season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson, and also added an assist later in the campaign.

Bhangdia made 14 appearances with 13 of them being starts. He tied for the team lead in goals with five and finished second in scoring with 12 points (5 goals, 2 assists).



RIDER UNIVERSITY

Sergio Aguinaga
Graduate - Defender

A big part of the successful season for Rider University this year was the play of Sergio Aguinaga. The Madrid native started 18 of the team’s 20 games and was second on the team in scoring (4 goals, 8 assists) and led the team in assists with eight. He was an First Team All-Conference selection and was also named to the Division I All-ECAC Team. The Broncs finished with a 10-7-3 record and earned the fifth seed in the conference tournament. They went on a run by knocking off the No. 4 seed Siena College, 1-0, before beating No. 6 Fairfield 2-1 in double overtime. They would overcome a 2-0 first half deficit to top seed Marist (featuring former Nor’easters teammate Kyle Galloway) in the conference final, but would ultimately lose in a penalty kick shootout, falling just short of the NCAA tournament. 

RUTGERS

Jackson Temple
Junior - Midfielder

Ritchie Barry
Senior - Forward

Over the last few years, Rutgers has steadily improved year after year under head coach Jim McElderry. The Scarlet Knights took another step forward in 2021 thanks to players like Jackson Temple and Ritchie Barry. The team won nine games (9-6-2), the most wins since 2015 (12).

Temple finished as the team’s leading scorer with six goals and two assists (14 points), which also ranked 7th in the Big Ten. Temple was an All-Big Ten (2nd Team) selection and was the first Scarlet Knight to be named to the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region Second Team since another pair of #OCN  alums, Mitch Lurie and Mitchell Taintor, did it in 2015.

Barry, who was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection during the spring season, played in 14 games (3 starts) for the Scarlet Knights in the fall campaign. He scored a pair of goals, including an 81st minute game-winner on the road against Northwestern.

SAINT LOUIS

Simon Becher
Junior - Forward
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Out of all the most impressive individual performances among the Nor’easters alums, Becher had the best statistical resume as he helped Saint Louis University finish the regular season as the country’s only undefeated team. Becher, who was the Nor’easters’ 2021 Offensive Player of the Year, was a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist as he was second in the country in scoring with 14 goals, 10 assists (38 points). He finished as the only player in the country with double digit goals and assists. Among Becher’s accolades, he was named a First Team All-American, All-Region, and the Atlantic-10 Offensive Player of the Year.

The Billikens, who won the Atlantic-10 “double” (regular season and tournament championship) would suffer their first loss of the season in the NCAA tournament when they lost to eventual runner-up and No. 2 seed Washington. It was the program’s first Elite Eight appearance since 2003.

After his breakout third season with the Billikens, Becher was selected in the First Round of the 2022 MLS Super Draft. He was taken 16th overall by the Vancouver Whitecaps.



ST. JOHN’S

Anthony Herbert
Senior - Defender

Herbert helped St. John’s add to the program’s storied resume, qualifying for the NCAA tournament for the 22nd time in the last three decades. Herbert played in 10 games (starting 8) as the Red Storm finished with an 11-6-3 record and earned an at-large bid to the big dance.  Herbert was part of a defensive unit that led the nation in clear sheets with 14 and was fifth in the country in goals against average (0.63). While St. John’s won an NCAA tournament game for the 14th time in the last 22 tournament appearances, their run would come to an end with a cross-country trip to take on the top-seeded Oregon State Beavers.



ST. JOSEPH’S

Chris Hunt
Junior - Midfielder

Aidan Watkins
Graduate - Midfielder
Ocean City Nor’easters 2019

Chris Hunt and Aidan Watkins helped the Hawks come painfully close to their first winning season in almost 20 years. It’s a season that could have gone very differently had the ball bounced their way a few times. St. Joe’s finished with an 8-9-2 record, but of those 9 losses, 8 of them were by a single goal.

Hunt played in all 19 games for the Hawks, starting 13 of them. He added three goals, all of them coming in wins (vs. George Mason, at George Washington, vs. Navy)

Watkins played in 18 of the team’s 19 games, starting 17 of them. The Hawks’ 2019 team MVP, led the team with seven assists, which was tied for third-best in the Atlantic-10.

SAINT PETERS

Marco Torino
Graduate - Forward
Ocean City Nor’easters 2018-19

Torino added one more solid year at Saint Peter’s, helping the team win eight games. After a slow start to the season, the Peacocks only lost one of their last seven games (5-1-1). They appeared to be heading into overtime in their conference quarterfinal against Monmouth, but the Hawks scored with three seconds left to stun Saint Peter’s. Torino started five of the seven games he played in and had an assist in a game against Drexel. He was also named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for the third time.

TEMPLE

Spencer Patton
Graduate - Defender

With some key injuries and a tough schedule, Temple had a challenging year in 2021, winning just two games. However, Patton was looking for a new challenge after helping Virginia win a national championship. He brought some veteran leadership to the Owls backline as he played in 11 games (starting 7). Patton scored his lone goal of the season against Tulsa, and he dished out an assist in a rivalry game against Villanova.



VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH (VCU)

Ulrik Edvardsen
Senior - Defender
Ocean City Nor’easters 2021

Edvardsen helped anchor the VCU backline this past season, helping the Rams to a winning record in 2021. The defender from Norway started all 13 games he played in, earning more than 1,000 minutes for VCU. The Rams started the season off hot, playing four ranked teams on the road in their first four games, beating No. 6 Wake Forest, earning a draw vs. No. 4 North Carolina, dropping a 1-0 game to No. 19 FIU, before shutting out No. 24 Charlotte. The Rams would continue to earn votes in the national polls for most of the season, but in the end would finish with a 9-7-2 record and a No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. 

VIRGINIA TECH

Nick Blacklock
Junior - Midfielder

Jacob Labovitz
Seniorr - Forward
Ocean City Nor’easters 2018

The Hokies had another strong season in the ultra-competitive ACC this year as Tech earned an 11-5-4 record and another trip to the NCAA tournament. Nick Blacklock and Jacob Labovitz were a big part of that.

Labovitz led the Hokies in scoring with 9 goals, 4 assists (22 points) including a pair of game-winning goals in 18 games (17 starts). He was named First Team All-ACC.

Blacklock played in all 20 games, starting 10 of them, adding two goals and three assists, including a game-winning penalty kick over defending national champion and top-ranked Marshall.

After earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, the Hokies would be eliminated by No. 21 West Virginia in a penalty kick shootout.



WAKE FOREST

Bo Cummins

Cummins made his collegiate debut for Wake Forest in the fall season, making 11 appearances for the ACC powerhouse. Out of those 11 games, the defender from Michigan contributed to all seven of the Demon Deacons’ clean sheets. Wake Forest finished with an 13-7-1 record and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. They won two games in the tournament (vs. Mercer University and on the road against #13 FIU) before falling to No. 4 seed Notre Dame on the road.
