BROOKLYN, NY (June 7, 2006) - On Wednesday, within the Brooklyn Knights' Metropolitan Oval, the Barons earned a scoreless draw against their division rivals in a rain storm that lasted all day and the majority of the match. Adam Edwards (Bucknell) of the Barons and Tommy Johansson of Brooklyn each made five saves to secure a point for their respective teams.
The match was barely 15 minutes old when both teams traded point blank opportunities. First, Byron Carmichael broke in on goal between a couple of defenders and mishit a ball wide right. A few minutes later, Brooklyn's Modoulamin Jammeh found a nice through ball at his feet, but he also hit it wide of the mark.
After the halftime break, neither team was able to break through until the 61st minute when Ruben Mingo had a well-taken free kick barely cleared the top of the bar.
The best chances of the game were given to Carmichael who had two opportunities to head home the game-winner in the 88th minute. The first header was denied by a reaction save by Johansson, and moments later, the second attempt sailed harmlessly over the bar.
Ocean City player/coach John Thompson played 90 minutes at center back and was proud of his club's defensive effort.
"Our defense was superb tonight," said Thompson. "It was very simply a game of missed chances in some very difficult conditions."
The draw pulls Ocean City (2-1-3, 9 pts.) within four points of first place, while Brooklyn (1-3-2, 5 pts.) uses their point to leap frog the Reading Rage to position themselves in fourth.
