The Ocean City Nor’easters are proud to announce that one of Major League Soccer’s original and most successful franchises will pay a visit to Carey Stadium this summer. The club will welcome the D.C. United reserve team to the Beach House for an exhibition game that will bring the country’s top level of soccer to South Jersey for the first time.
Four-time MLS Cup champion D.C. United will come to Ocean City on Saturday, May 21, for a 7 p.m. kickoff. United brings a history of soccer tradition and achievement to the match. The roll of honors that the team has is extensive with a record 12 U.S. Soccer Majors, including three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups wins, four MLS Supporters' Shields, and the 1998 CONCACAF Champions Cup title. Squaring off against the Union in Philadelphia, the night before, the D.C. United senior team is expected to travel with mostly senior academy players.
As part of the event, the Nor’easters is partnering with Athletes C.A.R.E., a non-profit organization established by Nor'easters alum, Alec Golini. Athletes C.A.R.E. and the Nor’easters will offer a free youth soccer clinic. Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 13 are invited to join players from the Ocean City Nor'Easters and D.C. United to learn some tips and tricks, play and compete, and just have some fun, all for a good cause! Instead of paying to participate in the clinic, we kindly ask that participants bring canned food/non-perishable items or make on-site monetary donations, all of which will be donated to the Food Bank of South Jersey! All registered players will receive a complimentary ticket to the game.
Ocean City and the D.C. United senior team have faced off before in a competitive match during the 2009 U.S. Open Cup, when the Nor'easters -- then named the Ocean City Barons -- lost a close 2-0 decision to United at the Maryland Soccerplex.
Ocean City fell just short of qualifying for the 2016 US Open Cup and are hoping to get back in for 2017 tournament. These friendlies are a good way to prepare players for playing against professionals and to get noticed by professional scouts and coaches and taking their game to the next level. The Nor’easters have played against MLS teams in the US Open Cup twice, D.C. United in 2009, and the Philadelphia Union in 2013 with both being very competitive games decided late in the second half. Ocean City remains one of three active PDL teams (Michigan Bucks, Des Moines Menace) who have advanced far enough to play against MLS teams more than once.
