Early red card dooms Nor'easters in road loss to Red Bulls U-23s
Ocean City's Kyle Gurrieri issued a 16th minute red card as Nor'easters look to rebound with this weekend's home opener
The Ocean City Nor'easters spent the majority of Sunday evening playing a man short and they paid the price for it, losing to the New York Red Bulls Under-23s on the road, 4-0.
Ocean City's Kyle Gurrieri, who was the hero in the Nor'easters' US Open Cup upset against the Charlotte Independence, was dealt a major blow in the 16th minute of the match. The midfielder was shown a straight red card for what was judged to be dangerous tackle to leave the visitors down a man.
With a man advantage, the Red Bulls controlled possession and peppered Ocean City goalkeeper Alec Smir with shots. Smir helped his team remain competitive in the first half, only allowing one goal to New York midfielder Allen Gavilanes.
The Nor'easters managed to hold the game at 1-0 until the home side broke through with Brian Saramago doubling the lead in the 64th minute. Juan Sebastian Sanchez added a third in the 79th minute and Kentaro Morrison would add a fourth in the final minute to put the game away.
"It's always going to be an uphill task away from home for 74 minutes with 10 against 11," said Nor'easters head coach John Thompson. "The other team will always create more chances than usual and your gameplan goes out the window. The lads had a good spell for 20 minutes after the sending off but the goal made it even more difficult."
The Nor'easters drop their second straight game and fall to 1-2-0 on the young season, but the good news is that Ocean City is finally returning home. After six straight games away from home in all competitions, the Nor'easters will look ahead to next weekend's home opener at The Beach House.
The Nore'asters will host the Long Island Rough Riders at Carey Stadium on Sunday, June 3. Kickoff for all home games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
