Emil Cuello, former Ocean City Nor'easters player, drafted in First Round by LA Galaxy

For the fifth consecutive year, the Ocean City Nor'easters had a former player selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft. In the 19th overall pick in the First Round, the Los Angeles Galaxy selected Emil Cuello, who had an outstanding college career at Southern Methodist University.

Cuello was a big part of one of the best seasons in recent memory at SMU as the Mustangs won the AAC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2017. What would he do for an encore in his senior year in 2018? He put the Mustangs back into the NCAA tournament by scoring the game-winning penalty kick in the American Athletic Conference championship game (He was named the AAC Tournament MVP as a result). It was the second year in a row that he scored the game-winner in the AAC title game. He scored five goals and dished out a team-high seven assists in his final season and was selected to the All-Conference and All-Region Team. His big senior year earned him an invitation to the Major League Soccer Combine, and ultimately made him a first round draft pick.

Cuello played for the Nor'easters during the 2016 USL League Two (formerly PDL) season. That year, the Nor'easters finished in second place in the ultra competitive Mid-Atlantic Division, earned a playoff spot and defeated three division champions to reach the national semifinals. Cuello played in two games during the regular season.

Cuello also becomes the second Ocean City alum to be selected in the First Round, joining Ryan Finley, who was taken with the 9th overall pick by the Columbus Crew in 2013.

Assuming Cuello signs a pro contract with the Galaxy, he will be the 72nd Ocean City player to play professionally.
