Catch Up On Our Nor'easters Stars Enjoying Successful College Seasons
After spending their Summer in Ocean City our Nor'easters stars have kept up the winning habit with their colleges this Fall. With the regular season coming to an end and big tournaments just around the corner a number of our players are playing for teams looking to compete for the top spot in their conferences.
Quinnipiac: Nor'easters - Machel Baker and Borja Angoitia
After a 2-1 victory over Iona on Saturday, Quinnipiac clinched the Metro Atlantic Athletic Championship regular season title with a game to spare and will go into their conference tournament as top seeds. Quinnipiac's two Nor'easters played key parts in that victory, as they have all season in helping the Bobcats to a 9-4-4 record. Machel leads the team in both goals and points scored, having recorded 10 goals and 2 assists in 17 games, a record which has also carried him to second place in the goal and point scorers table for the entire conference. After his performance against Iona Machel was also joined by Borja in earning MAAC player of the week honors. This was just one of many honors Borja has received of late, with 7 shutouts in 16 games and 68 saves so far Borja has also recently been named in the College Soccer News National Team of The Week as well as being awarded the Quinnipiac September Male Athlete of the Month.
Quinnipiac end their regular season at Fairfield on November 5th before taking on the lowest advancing seed in the MAAC tournament semi-finals at home on Friday, November 14th.
Notre Dame: Nor'easters - Leon Brown
Notre Dame defeated Pitt 4-1 on November 1st to seal their second straight Atlantic Coast Conference, Coastal Division Title. With an overall record of 10-4-3 and 19 in conference points Notre Dame also finished first in the entire ACC. In his fourth season with the team Leon has again played a key part in the Fighting Irish's success this year, starting 17 games and contributing 5 goals and an assist, including a brace in the league-winning victory over Pitt.
After their success in the regular season Notre Dame go into the ACC tournament as top seeds as they take on Virginia on Sunday, November 9th in the quarter-finals.
Syracuse: Nor'easters - Emmanuel Kollie and Tyler Hiliard
Emmanuel 'GoGo' Kollie and Tyler Hilliard along with ex-Nor'easters Nick Perea, Jordan Murrell, Stefanos Stamoulacatos led Syracuse to the number 2 seed for the ACC Championship, behind Notre Dame. With an overall record of 14-2-1 and 16 ACC points The Orange finished co-champions of the Atlantic Division along with Clemson and received the higher seeding by virtue of their 1-0 head-to-head win against them.
Tyler has started 14 of the 16 games he's played this season, playing a key role in a Syracuse defense that leads the NCAA in goals-against average (0.36) and is tied for the national lead in shutouts (11). He has also played a part at the other end of the field, scoring 3 goals and recording 1 assist so far this season to record 7 points. As well as his success on the field Tyler has also been named on the Capital One Academic All-District I Men's Soccer Team in recognition his excellent grades since joining the program.
Syracuse will now host a quarterfinal ACC match against the winner of North Carolina and Duke on Sunday November 1st at 1pm.
Creighton: Nor'easters- Brendan Hines-Ike
Brendan's Creighton University currently lead the Big East Conference, having amassed 19 conference points in an overall record of 13-2-2. Brendan has started 5 games so far this season, scoring one goal. Brendan is joined at Creighton by fellow Nor'easter Mike Paye, Mike has started 17 of the 18 games he has played this year with the tenacious midfielder also recording a goal for the team.
Creighton have one more regular season game against Providence before moving into the Big East Tournament.
Coastal Carolina: Nor'easters - Shawn McLaws
After defeat to top of the table Radford on Saturday Coastal Carolina sit second in the Big South table, with a conference record of 6-1-0 and a total record of 11-5-0. Nor'easters captain Shawn has started 14 games so far, contributing one assist whilst being part of a strong defense that has recorded six shutouts this season.
The Chanticleers still have two regular season games to play, against High Point and Longwood as the look to chase down Radford before the Big South tournament kicks off on November 11th.
Hartford: Nor'easters - Jhamie Hyde and Javoni Simms
On November 5th the Hartford Hawks take on UMass Lovell in an attempt to secure the second seeding in the America East conference. Hartford are currently one point behind UMass having achieved at 4-2-0 record in conference play whilst going 9-5-2 for the season. Javoni has started 13 games this season, weighing in with 2 goals and 3 assists to help the Hartford offense. Jhamie has been dominant at the other end of the field, starting 15 games at the start of the Hawks defense whilst contributing higher up the field with one goal for the season.
After tonight's game against UMass, Hartford will move onto the America East quarter finals on November 8th.
