Late deflected goal dooms Nor'easters in 1-0 loss at Reading United

The Ocean City Nor'easters were unlucky to fall in the Premier Development League Game of the Week to rivals Reading United AC in a close 1-0 affair. It was an even match for the whole 90 minutes, but a late deflection sealed the three points for Reading in a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference championship at Don Thomas Stadium in Reading, Pa.

In the 82nd minute, Reading got into a good attacking area. Aaron Molloy received the ball from Hugo Delhommelle, and took a shot on goal. Ocean City goalkeeper Todd Morton (Delaware / West Chester, PA) was in perfect position but Molloy's shot took a massive deflection off an Ocean City defender and found its way into the top right corner of the net to win it for Reading.

Despite the loss, Morton played exceptionally well in his debut for the Nor'easters, making five saves. The University of Delaware product was a rock at the back, playing with confidence, giving no hint that this was his first league action of the season.

Nor'easters attackers put a total of five shots on target for the game. Midfielder, Max Hemmings (Georgia State / Wokingham, England), led the team with three shots on the night. This includes a stoppage time effort that would have tied the game but was blocked inside the six yard box.

Despite the loss, the Nor'easters (3-2-0) remain in a three-way tie for first place in the Mid-Atlantic Division with Reading United (3-1-0) and the New York Red Bulls U23s (3-0-0).

It was the 43rd all-time meeting between Ocean City and Reading. Dating back to 1997, it remains one of the oldest rivalries in the league. The Nor'easters still lead the all-time series 19-17-7.

After two straight losses on the road, Ocean City will look to get back on track when they take on Jersey Express on the road on Wednesday, June 7. The game will be played at Williams Field in Elizabeth, N.J. at 8 p.m. Then, the following weekend, on Sunday, June 11, the Nor'easters will return to The Beach House to take on that same Jersey Express side. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
