The Ocean City Nor’easters overwhelmed the West Chester Flames, 5-2, on Saturday night, using an onslaught of offense to provide Head Coach Tim Oswald claim the title of All-Time Winningest Head Coach in Nor’easters PDL history.

The win was the 35th of Oswald’s career with the Nor’easters, passing Neil Holloway (2005-06, 2009-11) for the top spot in the Nor’easters history books.

The Nor’easters were paced by forward Matthew Vasquenza, who posted his first career PDL hat trick. The 5’9” sophomore from Xavier University scored in the 27th, 48th, and 53rd minute for the Nor’easters, easily helping to put the game out of reach.

Forwards John Manga and Alex Ridsdale each added a goal to continue their scorching seasons. Ridsdale has scored in each of the last three games, while Manga is tied for 8th in the PDL with 11 points on the season.

The match started off slowly, as both teams played stifling defense. The Nor’easters had several opportunities to take the lead early but were unable to capitalize. Ridsdale gave the Nor’easters several chances, but his crosses into the box found only grass.

In the 27th minute, forward Khesanio Hall fed Vasquenza for the tie-breaking goal on a cross to the right side of the box which Vasquenza neatly one-touched into the goal.

Hall, a striker from Oklahoma Wesleyan College, tallied two assists on the day, but he had a hand in the first three Nor’easters goals before he was subbed out in the 55th minute.

The Nor’easters entered halftime still holding the tight 1-0 lead after a first half full of missed opportunities. Ocean City was called for two off sides with their players all alone with the goalie and midfielder Jorge Guinovart missed a goal by inches in the 42nd minute.

However, just as the Nor’easters couldn’t buy a break in the first half, they couldn’t miss in the second half, heating up and blowing past the Flames.

Vasquenza added his second goal of the game in nearly the exact same fashion as his first one, taking the feed from Hall on the right side of the box and one-touching the ball past the goaltender.

Just two minutes later, Manga entered all alone and deposited his fifth goal of the season to give the Nor’easters a commanding 3-0 lead.

Similarly to the Nor’easters victory over the Lehigh Valley Sonic last Wednesday, the squad found themselves in charge of the game with an entire half left to play. Against Lehigh Valley, the team kept their foot on the gas and ended all hope for the opposition. The team did the same on Saturday, opting against cruise control and instead keeping the pressure on.

In the 53rd minute, Vasquenza added his third and final goal, fielding a beautiful pass from midfielder Aitor Unzue and chipping the ball over the goaltender to put the Nor’easters up, 4-0.

In the 60th minute, the Flames were called for a handball inside their box and the referees awarded the Nor’easters a penalty kick. Ridsdale was chosen to take the shot and he buried it into the bottom left of the net for a 5-0 Nor’easters lead.

Tim Dobrowolski earned his third consecutive win in net, making five saves.
