The Ocean City Nor’easters played a friendly against the New England Revolution Under-23s on Saturday night at Carey Stadium and came away with a 3-1 win. Nathan Regis led the way with a hat trick as Ocean City improves to 2-0 in friendlies against MLS academy teams this years. They shut out the DC United Under-23s 3-0 on May 21.

The Nor’easters were coming off a tough defeat to the New York Red Bulls U-23s during the week, and were looking to use the friendly to work on new tactics for the rest of the PDL season.

The first half was a mostly a defensive affair. The midfield was a battleground where the two teams looked to try and establish their perspective rhythms. Both teams used creative passes and physical play to gain possession and try to look for the early scores. Ocean City keeper Logan Ketterer made many dramatic saves in the first half to keep the score level.

In the 35th minute, the Nor’easters got on the board after a second chance opportunity by Regis. Regis' first opportunity was saved by the New England keeper but Ocean City kept the play alive through some slick passing, Regis stayed in the box and collected an assist from Jose Veizagara to get the Nor’easters on the board and the team went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

For the second half, both teams made changes and among them was Mike Kirk who replaced Ketterer in goal. Kirk made many big saves in goal ending with seven saves on the night.

The Revolution tied the game when Felix Debona collected a pass and was able to get the ball by Kirk to tie the game at 56th minute.

The Nor’easters gained the lead back after a great goal from Regis again. Regis received a long pass from Perica Obradovic and with two defenders on him, chipped the ball over the keeper and made the score 2-1.

Both sides used tough physical play toward the end of the match. Offside was a popular call for the officials and successful attempts on goal were few. Regis tried for goal but was saved by the New England keeper in the 77th minute.

In the 82nd minute, Nick Haanasen of OC came close with a header after a corner, but the keeper tossed the ball over the crossbar.

Ocean City got the final goal when Regis completed the hat trick in the 88th minute. With an assist from a long pass from Andre Momson, Regis dribbled around two defenders and shot the ball around the keeper and gave the Ocean City Nor’easters a 3-1 win.

For Nor'easters head coach Tim Oswalt, the match was important in the development of the team.

“We wanted to play well," said Oswald. "You’re playing an MLS academy team, we wanted to show the players we had and the ability we have. But without these having the games (friendlies) we can’t try these things out.”

The Ocean City Nor’easters return to league play next Saturday night when they face Evergreen FC, at Carey Stadium with kickoff at 7 p.m.
