The win puts an end to a couple of unfortunate all-time club records: A four-game road losing streak and a five-game winless streak. Bret Mollon (Temple / Washington, MI) and Tunde Ogunbiyi (Boston College / Gwynedd, PA) each made three saves with Mollon in net for the first half and Ogunibiyi entering the match for the second half.
The match was more challenging as the Nor’easters were short two players after defender Sal Pistone (Stockton College / Blackwood, NJ) and forward Terry Gibbs (Bloomfield College / London, England) were both sent off during Friday’s match.
"We played a fantastic team performance, against the odds tonight," said head coach Neil Holloway. "It has taken a while to get our first win, but now everyone is full of confidence and no one should rule out making a run at the playoffs, especially with our long stretch of home games in July."
The early part of the match seemed to favor Bermuda, with Mollon having to come up with a couple big saves in the opening 15 minutes. It was a mistake by the Hogges defense that led to the game’s first goal in the 21st minute. Bermuda defender Devrae Tankard slipped and fell with the ball, leaving Carmichael all alone with the Hogges goalkeeper Frederick Hall. The Ocean City all-time leading scorer slotted home his second goal of the year and the 54th of his career.
Eight minutes later, the tide would compeltely shift in the favor of the visitors as the Nor’easters added a second. Richter was at the right place at the right time as he pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area, sliding it past the keeper to make it 2-0. Giancarlo Granese (Hofstra / Ocean City, NJ), making his second consecutive start for the Nor’easters, earned his first career PDL assist on the goal.
After the first goal was scored, Ocean City seemed to dominate the play, but in the second half, Bermuda’s efforts to pull the game level saw them control the majority of the second half. After Ogunbiyi continued to keep them off the scoresheet, Tyrell Burgess of the Hogges was sent off for a bad tackle, and a few minutes later, Richter added his second goal of the match.
With his first two goals of the year, Richter brings his career total to 10, which ties him for sixth place on the club’s all-time goalscoring charts with current head coach Neil Holloway. The four points from the brace leap-frogged him into seventh place on the all-time list, passing Adam Sternberger and Steve Miller.
"This was a great trip for the lads to bond and really become a team," said Holloway. "I think the Nor’easter storm has just begun."
The Nor’easters improve to 1-3-2 on the young season and will play on the road next Saturday when they play the West Virginia Chaos.
