The Ocean City Nor’easters cruised to a 6-1 win, with a five star performance from MVP Dwayne Reid, after a delayed start by the shore.

The Ocean City Nor’easters cruised to a 6-1 win, with a five star performance from MVP Dwayne Reid, after a delayed start by the shore. The Nor’easters had a much later kick off than advertised as New York Magic arrived at the field with 8 players at 9:30pm.

The field at Carey Stadium saw a lot of water fall on it in the previous 24 hours and it was down to the Nor’easters front office staff (especially Dan Ash and President Giancarlo Granese), interns and game day workers that this game was able to be played at all after they removed the standing water.

It only took 6 minutes to break the deadlock. In form striker Dwayne Reid opened the scoring after a long pass from Tapiwa Machingauta and a mix up from between a Magic defender and the stand in Magic keeper with no gloves. In the 16^th minute the Magic goalkeeper and some other outfield players arrived to make it 11v11, Magic players then continued to arrive, giving them 3 substitutes by half time.

The Nor’easters doubled their lead through attacking midfielder Nick Perea on 19 minutes after Reid beat the left back and crossed low for Perea to smash home from close range. The two players then switched places as it was Perea who played a cute pass past two Magic defenders for Reid to latch onto and coolly finish to the right of the keeper. On 32 minutes Reid was then set free again from Perea but Reid smashed the post with his shot. It was 4-0 before you knew it with Reid completing his hat trick on 34 minutes with a rocket from the edge of the are after a lovely leading pass by Frank Tweneboa. Reid added a fourth after midfield general Ken Tribbett chipped a fantastic ball for Reid’s intelligent run across his marker and Reid finished first time just before half time on 43 minutes.

The Ocean City Nor’easters were 5-0 up at half time and this was a sign for the substitutions to start coming in. The second half began like a pre-season friendly with lots of substitutions from both teams disrupting the rhythm and flow of the match.  Ocean City continued to dominant, the rain held off but the field was very heavy and saturated and slowed everything down. 

It was on 60 minutes that Reid made a little bit of Nor’easters history. Frank Tweneboa was fouled inside the penalty area and the resulting penalty was given to Reid to take. Reid stepped up and slotted the ball to the left off the Magic goalkeeper to score his 5^th, with this goal from 12 yards he became the new record holder for the most goals in a single game for Ocean City passing the previous holder Ruben Mingo who scored 4 against Westchester Flames in a 6-2 win in 2005. 

The game began to slow and the Nor’easters were looking forward to the big top of the division clash against Reading United. The Magic scored a consolation with a volley from C. Marcel after a wide free kick from J. Wation. The game came to a close at 11:23pm and the players and staff will now rest for the Reading United clash.

Coach Oswald spoke after the game, “This game was played in very odd conditions, not knowing if the staff could get the field playable after a torrential downpour and wondering when the Magic will show up. We put them to the sword, know we need to recover and prepare for the biggest PDL game of the season on Sunday. It is wonderful to see these players (Reid) breaking records and they are just concrete signs of the form that they are in”
