The Ocean City Nor’easters continued their difficult start to the 2010 season with a 1-0 loss to the Bermuda Hogges on Friday night. The Nor’easters battled the Hogges shorthanded for the majority of the second half but gave up a goal midway through the second frame to extend their road losing streak to four games.
Ocean City drops to 0-3-2, the worst start in franchise history. The match was the first of two games in Bermuda this weekend. The two teams will square off again on Sunday night, with Ocean City still looking for their first win of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
30 minutes into the match, Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) would give the visitors their best chance of the match. The ball was loose in the penalty area and Carmichael got a foot to it, but fired the ball off the crossbar.
After a scoreless first half, the match would change 10 minutes into the second frame. Sal Pistone (Stockton College / Blackwood, NJ), making his first start of the season, came in for a hard tackle on Bermuda midfielder Damon Ming, and was subsequently shown a straight red card for the hard challenge.
With the home team putting on the pressure against the 10-man Nor’easters, Carmichael managed to break through about 25 minutes into the second half. The club’s all-time leading scorer, broke through the Hogges’ backline and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Frederick Hall made the big save to keep the game scoreless.
Around the 78th minute, the Hogges would break through when Wayne Bean volleyed home a loose ball after a goalmouth scramble to put Bermuda up 1-0.
About three minutes later, Ocean City’s hunt for an equalizer would receive a major blow when Terry Gibbs received his second yellow card and was sent packing after a bad tackle on Rakeem Deshields.
With Ocean City down by two men, Bermuda had their own player sent off when Ming retaliated after a foul and was sent off for his second yellow card offense. After the Hogges furious attack in the final minutes, goalkeeper Tunde Ogunbiyi (Boston College / Gwynedd, PA) was able to keep them from adding to their lead, and kept the final score at 1-0.
