Preview: Undefeated Nor'easters go for season sweep vs. Northern Virginia FC
Ocean City enters Sunday's game riding 13-game unbeaten streak
The Ocean City Nor'easters (5-0-1) will host Northern Virginia FC (4-2-1) on Sunday night as the club goes for the season sweep. The Storm enter the game riding a 13-game unbeaten streak and are looking to try to keep pace with first-place West Chester United in the Mid-Atlantic Division.
This will be the second meeting between the two clubs this season with Ocean City beating NVFC 3-2 in Leesburg, Va. last weekend (June 5). Simon Becher scored a pair of goals and Tal Segev added a free kick goal
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
General admission tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance on the Nor'easters website, and at the Carey Stadium gate with cash or with a smartphone. Ocean City School District students, soccer coaches of all levels and players from the South Jersey Elite Barons and New Jersey Surf all get in free.
For fans unable to make it out to the Beach House, the Nor'easters are partnering with BFA Productions to provide a live video stream of Sunday's game, and all home games for the 2021 season. Local broadcast veteran Mike Frankel will handle the play-by-play duties. A link to the online broadcast will be posted on the Nor'easters social media accounts.
There will also be live in-game updates available on the Nor'easters' Twitter account (@OCNoreasters).
The Nor'easters enter the weekend riding high with league honors. Ocean City midfielder Tyler Watson was named to the USL League Two Team of the Month (May), and the team is currently ranked No. 4 in the league's power rankings.
In their last game, the Nor'easters defeated Philadelphia Lone Star FC 2-1 at the Beach House on Wednesday night to extend their home unbeaten streak to 12 games, the second-longest home unbeaten streak in club history. Becher and Segev scored a goal each to lead the way.
Becher has a team-high six goals, which is also tied for second in the league. Ocean City midfielder Theo Quartey is tied for the league lead in assists with four. The Storm, as a team, also rank third in the league in goal difference with a +13 (17 goals for, 4 goals against).
NVFC is off to the club's best start in years with a 4-2-0 record and are seeking the club's first playoff berth since 2011. They surpassed their win total from last two seasons (2019) in the first two games with victories over Philadelphia Lone Star FC (3-2) and Reading United AC (2-1). After dropping a 3-2 decision at home to first place West Chester United, Northern Virginia bounced back with back-to-back 2-1 wins over Lehigh Valley United and Real Central New Jersey. After the loss a week ago to Ocean City, Luke Campbell scored NVFC's lone goal in a 1-1 draw on the road against Lehigh Valley United this past Wednesday.
The last time the Nor'easters played Northern Virginia FC was in 2019 when they were known as Evergreen FC. Ocean City has been playing NVFC since their days when they were known as the Northern Virginia Royals in the mid 2000s. The Nor'easters first met them (as the Royals) in 2004, and despite the Royals being a pro team, Ocean City defeated them, 3-1. From that day, the Nor'easters began their all-time unbeaten streak against Evergreen FC which is currently at 17 games (15-0-2).
A win for the Nor'easters would give them the best start to a season since 2004.
The Nor'easters will be following the state's COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of everyone attending Sunday's game and throughout the entire season. The state of New Jersey does not have a capacity limit for venues like Carey Stadium at this time, and fans are not required to wear masks in an outdoor setting, but anyone who is not vaccinated is encouraged to wear a mask in any indoor setting such as bathrooms.
