Ryan Richter Signs With Toronto FC of MLS

Former Nor'easter Ryan Richter has signed with Toronto FC and is back in Major League Soccer. Toronto FC announced that the club had acquired the 23 year old defender, but as per team and league policy terms of the deal were not disclosed. He will be added to the roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

After 2 years, 45 games, 11 goals and 5 assists with the Nor'easters from 2008 - 2010, he finished at La Salle University and was taken as the 5th overall pick in the first round of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft by expanison side Philadelphia Union. His spell with the Union included playing in friendlies against Everton and a Real Madrid team including (and tackling) Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. Check out his Nor'easters page

Richter found himself with USL Pro club Charleston Battery for the 2012 season and was instrumental in helping them lift the National Championship. He played 29 games scoring 2 goals and grabbing 4 assists and started all three of the Battery's post-season games including the Championship game.

New coach Ryan Nelson has made Richter one of his first MLS signings since taking over at the club. “Ryan is a versatile, fit and talented young player” said Toronto FC Head Coach Ryan Nelsen. “We’re hopeful that Toronto will be a place where he can flourish.”

Richter is happy to be back in the MLS and knows that he has to prove some doubters wrong (just like his alma mater La Salle is doing in the NCAA Tournament!). "Happy to join Toronto FC thanks to all who have supported me and for all the kind words today. Time to go to work". Richter wore 23 throughout his career with the Nor'easters and Philadelphia Union but he might have a fight to get that number from first team regular and Canadian fan favorite Terry Dunfield. Richter is also hoping to link up with another new signing, former English Premier League start and Welsh international forward, Robert Earnshaw, who he hopes to supply with some goals this season.

Richter becomes the second Nor'easter in the MLS after Ryan Finley was taken number 9 Overall in the MLS SuperDraft.
