TAMPA, FL (May 21, 2008) - United Soccer Leagues announced today the USL Premier Development League Team of the Week for the fifth week of the USL season, honoring the Ocean City Barons’ Steve Miller as Player of the Week.
Miller became only the second player to score a hat trick for the Ocean City Barons last Wednesday in an 8-1 win over the New Jersey Rangers. Photo courtesy Colgate University. |
Miller outpaced other deserving members of the week five team with his five goal, one assist weekend in which his Barons hammered the New Jersey Rangers 8-1 on Wednesday and then drew even with the formidable Long Island Rough Riders 2-2 on Saturday.
Miller netted his hat-trick against the overmatched Rangers with the second, fourth and fifth goals of the game, also assisting on the first. But against Long Island, Miller’s goals were much more significant. The first brought the visiting Barons level with the Rough Riders in the 21st minute. That goal was off an assist from midfielder Kyle Evans. Miller’s second did the same, this time in the 90th minute on a pass from 67th minute sub Byron Carmichael.
Miller is the second Ocean City Baron to ever record a hat-trick. The first, Ruben Mingo, had two: one in 2004 and another in 2005.
Another admirable performance includes JD Warman’s goal and assist match for Kansas City, on the road in Colorado, where the Brass have not won in seven years. The 19-year-old tallied in the 53rd minute and assisted on the game-winner in the 70th. The Brass won 2-1 on Sunday after suffering a 3-2 defeat the night before. Warman started and played 75 minutes in that loss.
A third significant effort came from the opposite end of the spectrum, an eight-save shutout feat from the Central Florida Kraze’s David Gorrick in net. His efforts won a 2-0 decision for the Kraze in their home match with the Atlanta Silverbacks. Gorrick’s net has remained empty for the majority of this young season – he has not been scored on in the last 306 minutes. He also leads the league in wins with four.
