Nor'easters to host second open tryout for 2022 USL League Two season

The Ocean City Nor'easters will celebrate the club's 25th season in 2022 and they are looking for players to help them make a championship run in USL League Two.

After a successful first tryout on Dec. 28, the Nor'easters will host a second open tryout on Sunday, Jan. 2 at Carey Stadium ("The Beach House") in Ocean City, N.J. The tryout will run from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

The cost is $60 to participate (SIGN UP HERE).

"Each year we look forward to this event," said Nor'easters sporting director Tim Oswald. "We always have talented players on display and we have had great success filling out not only our first team USL2 roster, but also our Reserve and Under-23 teams. I think if players want to compete at a high level in the right pyramid and tiered development structure, our model has proven to be effective. We are excited to build another fantastic squad in 2022."

The Nor'easters will be led in 2022 by a familiar face with Kevin Nuss taking over as head coach. Nuss spent seven seasons with the Nor'easters in a variety of roles, including as head coach and sporting director in 2019.

Nuss, a Logan Township, N.J. native, just finished his first season as head coach of the Indian Hills Community College men’s soccer program in Ottumwa, Iowa.

"Tryouts are a valuable resource to provide players a pathway to our first team and beyond," said Nuss. "I am excited to see the talent in attendance and to find some undiscovered players."

The Nor'easters will play in their 25th season as a club (19th as a member of USL League Two) in 2022. Out of the more than 70 teams in North America, the Nor'easters have the fifth-best record in USL League Two since 2003, and the seventh-most wins in the history of the league. The Storm also play at one of the best home venues in the country, Carey Stadium. It is nicknamed "The Beach House" because it's located right off the boardwalk, next to the beach, and just a couple hundred yards away from the Atlantic Ocean at America's Greatest Family Resort: Ocean City, N.J. The Nor'easters also perform well in front of their fans, owning the fourth-best home record of any team in the league since 2003.

After the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nor'easters rebounded with another successful season in 2021. With head coach Alan McCann in charge, Ocean City finished in second place in the Mid-Atlantic Division with a 9-2-3 record, earning a spot in the USL2 playoffs. Statistically, the Storm featured the best offensive and defensive team in more than 15 years. The Nor'easters scored 40 goals and only allowed 12, the best goal difference since Ocean City's undefeated 2004 season. After defeating the Boston Bolts in the opening round of playoffs, the season would come to an end in the Eastern Conference Semifinals with a narrow 1-0 loss to West Chester United.

The Nor'easters not only have a strong tradition of team accomplishments, but also with individual players. Since 2003, more than 95 Ocean City players have moved on to play the game professionally in more than 20 countries from around the world. There have been 26 players drafted by Major League Soccer teams, including 2019 USL League Two MVP Deri Corfe. Corfe, who plays professionally for FC Tucson (USL League One), became the third Nor'easters player to team history to win the league's MVP award. Ocean City is one of only two teams in league history to have three MVP winners.
